I know this community is pretty much dead but has any one been to the 'Bloodline tattoo' parlour on Conniborrow? Any thoughts on Holly?

Did everyone get their Citizen this week?

Also do any of you know of any hair dressing jobs in the local area?

Hello! I know this community hasn't been used in well over a year now, but maybe someone will read this and be able to offer me some advice.

First, some information about me: I'm a 25 year old Canadian teacher. I live in Toronto and have never been to the UK (or anywhere in Europe, for that matter) before. I've been looking into teaching jobs in England for the past couple of months, having heard that there is a shortage of teachers over there (we have the exact opposite problem here at the moment). Last week, I was offered a job at a high school in Roade.

Now, I know that Roade is a very small community, and I've always been a city girl, but I figure this is all about new experiences and all that, so I think I'm willing to give it a try. I've been looking things up a bit online; I understand that Roade is quite close to both Milton Keynes and Northampton, and so I'm considering my options. Ideally, I would like to live in one of those two places, and then commute to work in Roade every day. But reading about a place you've never been to before can only tell you so much, and obviously, this is a big decision that I don't want to make without knowing exactly what I'm getting myself into. I'd really like to get a feel for things from some people who are actually familiar with the area.

So...is there anyone out there who is familiar with the area and can tell me a bit more about it? Mainly, I'd like to know about living expenses, what there is to do, how reliable public transportation is, and how long it takes to get to London and other major cities by train. Also, if by chance you are familiar with both Milton Keynes and Northampton and can sort of tell me how they differ, in terms of culture, lifestyle, and so on, you'd be immensely helpful in allowing me to figure out if one would be a better fit for me over the other.

I don't really have a whole lot of time to make the decision - I told the school I'd get back to them by tomorrow, or the next day at the latest! - and at this point, the only thing that's making me hesitate is the fact that it's in such a small community. (Besides that, everything else about the school seems great to me.) Like I said, I've always lived in large(ish) cities here in Canada, so I'm a little nervous about the prospect of working in a town as small as Roade, and living in either Milton Keynes or Northampton. I just don't want to be bored out of my mind, especially since I won't know anyone at all when I first move.

Any information, honest opinions, and words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Dear all,

I wonder if you could recommend an AutoCAD tutor in East Midlands (the closer to Bedford / Northampton, the better) for private lessons.

If you are such a person, or you know someone relevant, could you please provide the details in a comment.

Many thanks

Hi there.
I'm in the process of moving back to MK, after having lived in the Channel Islands for three years. A friend has told me that Bar Central has closed, which used to be my old haunt. Anyone know of any decent rock bars in MK or am I walking into a city of the dammned type situation where it's all weatherspoons and nothing else?

Hi, I wonder if anyone could help, someone has posted this on another board and I just wanted to post it here.

"Forgive me for posting this and also the bad English. I'm still in a state of shock but wanted to try and do something.
On my return from LKA Championship Show with my dog Tyson Sh Ch Tonkory Guiness I stopped at Marston Morteine service station, yesterday 7th December, just off the M1 at J13. Whilst I was in service station a white youth jumped into my car a Blue Vauxhall Vectra Estate. Seeing him I ran out, tried to smash driver window and then managed to open rear passenger door but as I did so he started the> car and sped away towards the M1. In the rear was my and Judith's B/W Border Collie dog Tyson.

Police are searching but the service station was just a mile from the M1 and the driver could have gone in either direction. There was approx 150 miles of fuel in car. Please keep alert incase you see my car or Tyson.

Registration KJ55 XFZ, Dark Blue Vauxhall Vectra Estate. Last seen J13 services Marston Morteine of M1 close to Milton Keynes.

This is the dogs poster on Dogs Lost.

This man is really upset and it is his champion dog, and I know how much work and effort these people can put into their pedigree dogs when showing them, and I also know if a kid is able to steal a car with a dog in it, what else are they able to do :-(

Just a quick plea, I will post this onto Milton Keynes journal too, but if anyone anywhere has seen maybe a car dumped, or a dog walking round on it's own matching the description of Tyson. Get in touch with Ross asap.

A recent post by one of my LJ friends has reminded me that I really should get a proper massage - probably just neck and shoulders as they are the worst, but a full back massage would be nice.

I have a couple of leaflets, but can anyone recommend someone that they've been to (in MK or easy reach thereof)? I'd prefer to be massaged by a woman (not being dodgy, it's just because that's what I'm comfortable with...)

Anyone know what is/was going on at about 2:45pm today on Silbury Boulevard by the M&S end of the City Centre? I saw at least 4 police cars and a police van on the road with their lights flashing, but couldn't see why...

I've just heard from a family member that fuel at Tesco's and Morrisons in a number of areas including Milton Keynes may be contaminated - causing problems to car engines.

Update 28/02/2007 20:30:

News definitely points at petrol from Tesco and Morrison being affected, generally causing damage to the oxygen sensor.

Read more on the BBC News Site.

Update 01/03/2007 10:40

Tesco and Morrisons both say there is nothing wrong with their fuels, meanwhile ASDA has a handful of complaints from users of high end cars with fuel management systems:

Read More at the BBC

Update 01/03/2007 19:20:

Higher than normal levels of silicon have been detected in a number of the petrol samples from cars affected:

(19:40) - Just heard on the news - Tescos have set up a freephone number for those concerned about fuel bought from their pumps: 0800 028 6428

Update 03/03/2007 17:00

Contaminated unleaded petrol has been traced to a fuel depot in Essex.

From the article: "Morrisons has stopped selling unleaded fuel at 41 outlets supplied by the depot until tests are complete.

Tesco said it is to empty its unleaded tanks at 150 outlets in the south east but would refill them with uncontaminated fuel and continue sales.

Asda, which buys fuel from Harvest Energy, said it was to replace unleaded petrol at 30 forecourts in the south east supplied from the affected depot as a "precautionary measure"."

Update 06/03/2007 15:25:

Tesco and Morrisons are offering to refund the cost of repairs to cars damaged. From the article:

"A Tesco spokeswoman said if people did not have receipts they should call the advice line anyway because each case would be considered individually... A Morrisons spokesman said they would also refund petrol costs and repairs and said anyone who did not have receipts would be "supported"."

Customers affected by Tesco's petrol should call 0800 028 6428. Morrisons customers affected should call 0845 611 6111.

I'm probably moving to the Northampton/MK area in June this year for work, and was wondering where you lot go to get your live-music fix? There's loads and loads on where I am now (the Black Country), but MK has always seemed a bit dead in this respect.

(I spent my teenage years in a village near Daventry and for gigs always had to travel to places like Birmingham or Nottingham - this was fine when I was at school and finished for the day before 4pm, but now I'm working it's probably a bit far, other than at weekends. The Roadmender in Northampton would have been great but it was shut down for renovations until just before I left for university, and I understand that the council have effectively shut it down again.)

For instance, looking at the Nine Inch Nails tour, there are three dates in this area (two in Birmingham and one in Wolverhampton), but London seems to be the easiest from MK. Same for the coming tour by The Wildhearts.

Any recommendations, fellow Milton Keynesians?

I don't know if it's allowed on this community to ask this but here goes, does anyone know of any not too badly paid Admin jobs in MK? I'm checking the Citizen every week to no avail and signed up with lots of agencies but no luck so far.

If this is an inappropriate post please feel free to delete.

This is a total long-shot, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any good vets in Milton Keynes, in particular ones that are good with rats.

My rats had a check-up recently and I wasn't too happy with the vet I saw as he wasn't as through as I would have liked, and wasn't too knowledgeable about rats either. So, I'm looking for another one because if my rats ever get sick (I'm hoping they won't of course, but I'm not willing to take the chance) I'd like to be able to take them to someone I trust.

So if anyone has a recommendations (even just for vets regardless of being good with rats or not) I would very much appreciate it.
