"Contaminated" Fuel - Tescos and Morrisons
I've just heard from a family member that fuel at Tesco's and Morrisons in a number of areas including Milton Keynes may be contaminated - causing problems to car engines.

Update 28/02/2007 20:30:

News definitely points at petrol from Tesco and Morrison being affected, generally causing damage to the oxygen sensor.

(19:40) - Just heard on the news - Tescos have set up a freephone number for those concerned about fuel bought from their pumps: 0800 028 6428

Update 03/03/2007 17:00

Contaminated unleaded petrol has been traced to a fuel depot in Essex.

From the article: "Morrisons has stopped selling unleaded fuel at 41 outlets supplied by the depot until tests are complete.

Tesco said it is to empty its unleaded tanks at 150 outlets in the south east but would refill them with uncontaminated fuel and continue sales.

Asda, which buys fuel from Harvest Energy, said it was to replace unleaded petrol at 30 forecourts in the south east supplied from the affected depot as a "precautionary measure"."

Update 06/03/2007 15:25:

Tesco and Morrisons are offering to refund the cost of repairs to cars damaged. From the article:

"A Tesco spokeswoman said if people did not have receipts they should call the advice line anyway because each case would be considered individually... A Morrisons spokesman said they would also refund petrol costs and repairs and said anyone who did not have receipts would be "supported"."

Customers affected by Tesco's petrol should call 0800 028 6428. Morrisons customers affected should call 0845 611 6111.

Well, I've got my fingers crossed that you aren't affected - reports I read on the BBC News site just now suggest that the problems tend to become noticeable soon after filling up...

Hope so too

I'm in MK and my car is currently at the garage awaiting repairs because of what I believe to be a bad batch of petrol I got from Tesco at Kingston on Feb 16th.

Good luck, I hope it doesn't cost you too much. I suggest you get a statement from the garage as to the damage, their findings or opinions as to the cause, and of course the costs. I hope you are able to reclaim the costs of the repairs once it is certain who is responsible...
